Ear Worms

Ear Worm (def’n):  A catchy piece of music that continually repeats itself through a person’s mind after it is no longer playing.  Also known as ‘musical imagery repetition’, ‘involuntary musical imagery’, and ‘stuck song syndrome’

Here is my latest affliction.  WARNING:  This video might bore holes into your skull and reside there for days, weeks or even months on end until you end up going complete bat shit crazy, spending the rest of your life watching reruns of ‘Circle Square’ while drooling over a plate of soggy graham crackers.

Living with an eight year old, I’ve found myself falling victim to many different ear worms:  Bieber, Cyrus, Gomez and just about every current child star that Disney has to offer.  I’ve fallen for them all.  And who could ever forget the Great Katy Perry ‘California Girls’ debacle in the summer of 2012?  My God!  Had my training peers known then that that particular tune was going on over and over in my head during our Masters swim sessions, well, I never would have heard the end of it.

But this latest Baby Shark song takes the freakin’ cake.  This is the T-Rex of ear worms!  It’s simply enough to be memorable.  It’s stupid.  And, worst of all, it’s catchy.  Yes, simple, stupid and catchy, the holy triumvirate of ear worms.  And this diabolical ditty has them all in spades.  I sing it to myself on my runs, while swimming in the pool, while driving in my truck, while standing in line at the checkout, shit, just about everywhere.

I tried just about everything to get it out of my head including listening to the entire ‘Drive-By Truckers’ discography (the best southern rock, hillbilly,  testosterone-infused alternative I could think of), watching endless episodes of ‘Breaking Bad‘, and I even contemplated a home lobotomy with a can opener and bendy swizzle straw.  No luck.  Surely, this particular torture is real Wrath of God kind of stuff here and I’m not sure how I will ever be able to survive this for much longer.

Please, God, make it stop.

God help me.
