How to Know When You’ve Been Successfully Domesticated

How do you know when you’ve been successfully domesticated?  For some it might be when you happen to catch yourself scrubbing somebody’s skivvies while humming a Barney song, for others it may be when you realize that you have just spent an entire Friday night planning out your Christmas card list rather than getting sauced at the local boozer.  For me, this moment of realization came while on a recent business trip to San Antonio.

The occasional traveling opportunity is just part of the expectation with my current employer.  As a single bachelor on the prowl these were very welcome opportunities to check out a different scene, indulge in the local cuisine, maybe sample the night life and otherwise act like an ass on the company dollar.  Specifically, being in Texas, I should be out indulging in anything that has either walked, crawled or galloped its way across the Great Plains at some point in its life cycle, and maybe enjoying one too many Bud Light’s while line dancing to some Buck Owens tune.  Whatever, it should be infinitely more exciting than what I did.

So what did I do instead you ask?  Why, returned promptly back to my hotel room by seven o’clock and strip down to my boxers to watch ‘Good Luck Charlie’  on the television.

Somebody shoot me.

Yes, this ‘Domestication’ realization practically mule kicked me upside the head on the first night.  Somewhere along the line of adopting a family, this whole perception of travel changed dramatically.  Suddenly, it was more of an annoyance than it was an easy chance to get away.  But truth be told, where I know I should be out checking out the sites and otherwise doing the things abroad that I can’t do at home, all I really wanted to do was come home and call my girls.  I know, right?  I’m shocked too.  Funny what you miss.  But as it turns out, maybe I had good reason…

Awwww.

Awwww.

…for, apparently, I was missed too.  Doesn’t that just give you the warm gushies?

God help me.
